On large maps it is often useful to have strong defenses where you can use a limited number of troops to defend against larger enemy forces. Then you can concentrate your offensive power on enemy weak spots. This only works if your opponent concentrates on an area after you fortify. I find that most quality opponents will defeat me if I do this since they don't keep attacking the fortified areas. Many painful games have taught me this, but I still find old habits hard to break.
