Next player?

I've been in two games where the timer ticked down for my opponent and it is supposed to be my turn, but when it reach 00:00:00 a text "Next player" appears but the game does not become highlighted for me and when I get into the game I can't take my turn. The first time it happaned a new timer appeared and it started to count down again, this time it just keeps saying "Next player" and it is still not my turn. What is this?

Edit: Now the second game has given my opponent another 12 hours, is this when people buy more time on there turn? And can this keep happen indefinatly?

when people buy more time they can extend turns quite a bit. However there is a limit. If you mouse over the opponent icon you will see aways left. This is how many times they can extend. Aways left also increases 1 every few turns, just not sure how many or frequently they are added.
