Now that yo say it, would it not be kind of exciting with the Crusader giving a stack bonus, depending on how your stack looks? It does not need to be very complicated, just a bonus for this and that many "good" types (not number) of units in the stack. Ex. 2 good creatures: 1 stack, 4: 1 stack, 1 defend, 6: as 4 + 4 move bonus, 2 view bonus, 8: all of above + 2 stack vs. evil units.
Would only work with a (good) hero in the stack, only in one stack at the time (?).
Maybe the ideas above are a bit unfinished, but I think the concepts really good, forcing the player to buy different productions, mix around with the battle orders (doesn't want to have a scout first and loose the 8 stack-bonus, for example), choose between a strong "evil" unit or a weaker "good" unit for the bonuses and so forth and so forth. If the bonuses gets balanced it could really improve the amount of tactics one can put into stack builds and unit production/vectoring.
Of course it should be one unit like this for the evil stacks too.
How does it sound?
Edit:
Maybe this is a little late, now that beta4 is almost here. Beta5, perhaps?
