No 90% rule in ruins.

You are probably better off than 75% chance since its the enemy you battle and not just the dice. But if you go above 20 you will always hit making it impossible to die in a level 2 ruin. I don't know the percentage chance in fact to win with UL 15. I will see what I can do by B5 to make ruins easier to predict.

So...I had a lvl2 paladin and a scout (UL 13) search a lvl 2 ruin guarded by a single ghoul (UL 5), my hero was killed. How unlikely is that outcome?

Dice is 20 sides. a fifth of normal battle dice so if it was a normal battle it would have been a unit with battle 65 dies to a unit with 25.
Pretty unlucky. Not sure if a 90% rule would have saved you.

I have now had a lvl 4, 21 UL paladin killed by a ghoul (in a lvl 3 ruin). There were three ghouls, but the first one took him down :(

Magican,

The dice are pretty high in a L3 ruin (30+) so being only 21 is risky when there are lots of enemies even if they are weak. I never go near a L3 ruin unless I am 28+ and preferably 30+.

In one of my games I searched a L3 ruin, and did not have to fight anyone, instead an Archon joined my forces.

This has only happenned to me once, but I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this?

Side note, I feel like I have a pretty good handle on how risky each of the ruins are vs. my hero's UL and I don't think they need to be made any softer for beta5.

This happens to me all the time. It looks to be an instant level up reward and skips the actual battle screen.
Not sure if it's intentional.

Also, a couple scouts with my hero and I can take Ruins easily

There is a small bug in beta4, that if you search a ruin and gains a level, you will skip the battle+reward popups.
This has been fixed in beta5.
