Tutorials

Postby piranha » Fri Nov 18, 2011 12:06 pm

I've been making tutorials for a while now. Thought it could be a good idea to let you try them and give your tips and opinions about them.

To try the tutorials copy the url in your browser: http://www.warbarons.com/tutorials.php
(if you just click the link the page will load in the forum iframe)

The first three categories are working, the other tutorials aren't done yet.
The tutorials are based on B5 so you will be playing on the same files that we are working on which could cause errors now and then but should be alright most of the time. Also you will need to refresh your cached files later when we release B5 to not use old JS files.

If you feel like making a tutorial you are welcome. I'm out out creative inspiration at the moment after remaking the same tutorials again and again while working on the tools.

sign 2 in the first tutorial - the first sentence should finish "...see how much movement the horse has remaining"

sign 3 - "...until you run out of moves"
"when you have run out of moves, click the end turn button on the right side of the screen or go to the top drop-down menu called Turn and click on End Turn"

remove the word fresh from third paragraph.

sign 5
"...the flag with a number shows you how many units are located there."

you should be your later down that sign. Also, when the elves and hv inf move into the beacon the screen resets back at the lite cav to the north instead of back on the elves.

Looks really good piranha! and I have to say, in the battle tutorial, its frightening how effective the ghosts & wolf riders are - a great demonstration! Ive never seen them in action like that before. wow!

I've been thinking about tutorials, and I think what newbies need is some kind of a youtube flick showing how a good player starts his game, all his actions and moves, with detailed (spoken) commentary. for exemple on 8K map:
move1:
- I'm choosing palladin due to his UL because there are a lot of ruins here,
- I 'm scouting what kind of units are guarding the nearest cities,
- I'm creating enough strong stack to reach 90% chances of winning a battle to avoid losing my hero and attacking one of the cities,
- I'm plundering the city because I'm going to safe some money to receive second hero with an ally,
- I'm buying scouts in my capital, so they could help my hero to loot the ruins etc.

move 2: capturing next cities, looting ruins
move 6: first fights with oppoents, checking up their stacks, buying profitable production etc

so what players need is also some kind of strategic tutorial, because a lot of them know how to play but doesn't understand basic strategic rules, and therefore quickly become discouraged...

what do you think about that?

I think a youtube would be good. Will try to do one when I get some time for it. Tutorials are probably good to try the game but a youtube should be better at describing how to think when playing to be successful.
