Ruins - how do they actually work

Ruins have a description of danger upon them. Is this a totally random thing or will a higher level hero have a better chance of surviving? Does his army influence anything?

Currently in Beta3, there is actually no danger to visiting the ruins. You will always find some amount of gold in the ruin in Beta3.
