I'm a huge fan of DLR - used to have a pc with a partitioned harddrive that ran Windows ME on just to play it - but I lost the disk (my four year old found my cds) so haven't played it for years. Anyway, I was cleaning up my desk this weekend and low and behold found the disk but unfortunately I no longer have the old pc. I'm currently running Windows 7 and from my understanding I can't even download the game from the disk. Does anyone here know how to get it running - I'd love to play - but I'm not very technical when it comes to computers?

LichKing,

Sure, no problem.

I guess with 5 of us, are we going to play a 5 player game or would you 4 *newbies* prefer to play each other in a 4 player game (which I can still set up for you)? Other options are to try and find another player and have 2 3-player games or do several 1v1 games. Depending on the number of players in a game we can pick settings (Hidden Map, FOW, initial army start etc. I think we should go with no-teleport).

LPhillips, yes you all need to send me your army sets. I prefer you just send me the pgs file (its in the pgs folder under DLR) rather than email me and make me create the set myself. Take your time getting familiar with the game again. It's much more complex than Warbarons currently is so it will take some time. If you (or anyone) wants, I can review your set and tell you whether it's adequate or not.

Lord Dubois,

At the start of this thread LPhillips posted a link to where you can download the game. Just download it directly from there and you can play. No need to re-install from your CD which isn't possible anyway.

I have Vista too. You have to add in the command line of the shortcut /WINCURSOR, so that it becomes

C:\DLRdir\Darklord.exe /WINCURSOR

I believe it's -wincursor

I certainly use that and without it, the game crashes frequently.

Well, I can play for about a half of a turn :)

the '-wincursor' doesn't appear to be having an effect. Any other suggestions? Does the game have to be saved in a certain location?

The download site said something about a Virtual Box?

MoonKnight,

You don't need to run it in a Virtual Box. It's just an option for those that can't get it to run otherwise (often happens with players who have widescreen monitors and the resolution doesn't change properly when entering/exiting DLR).

Are you sure you entered the -wincursor correctly? Assuming you put a DLR shortcut on your desktop, you should right click on that shortcut, select properties and in the shortcut tab make sure it says

E:\DLR\Darklord.exe -wincursor

Where the E:\DLR\Darklord.exe is the path to where you have DLR on your machine. You need a space between the end of exe and before the -.

Then run the game by double clicking the shortcut.

If that still is causing a problem, you can add another option of -nosound after the wincursor to remove sound effects (some players need that too).

I wasn't doing it right, I was adding it in outside of the shortcut...it's working now!

Awesome, looks like I'll be staying up late tonight

KGB, I'd like to have some explanation:

1. What determines max mana? I see some cities and crystals increase mana income, but I didn't understand what increases max mana.
2. Since there is an editor to change units' stats, must the one who prepares the game (that is, you) check for every game all army sets to avoid cheating? I hope there won't be the need for a cross-check for yours :)
