Practical terrain bonus

I wonder if some terrain bonuses for units have real practical use in games. Bonuses like open or city are obvious, but for instance, do battles ever take place in hills or swamps?

I guess it depend on the map layout. Perhaps most maps don't have that much terrain. But if there is a passage of hills then it could be used to block. I will create that on my next map for sure :-).

I suppose that roads only change the movement cost of the squares thay are on, but not the terrain type itself. So when a road lies on a hill, units will travel easily through it, but for example Giant will still get +2 in hills bonus. If this is true, then it's definitely possible to make other terrain types more important by smart map design as you say. Because if there are some random hills or swamps in areas where players don't even have a reason to move their units to, these terrains will never come into play.

Thats the way it is and thats why a couple of dwarfs or giants, or even a wolf with some dwarfs could force the opponent to either move the slow way around or fight cheap units that are quite powerful.

I often use harder terrain to place my stacks in for 2 reasons:

1) You need enough movement to move into the square to attack. So if your stack is in a swamp/hills it takes the opponent 5/6 moves to attack you. So if they have to travel a long way they may not be able to attack
2) Being in such terrain avoids the open bonus that makes the cavalry/pikemen units so deadly right now. So if your stack does not contain cavalry/pikemen you are better off ending your turn in hard terrain.
