Beta4 Maps

SnotlinG,

Just took a look at the latest development blog.

Looks like the 2 new terrain types are Lava and Ice. Sweet. That now covers all but one DLR type (rock). Incidentally, in DLR, Lava was only passable by fliers and boats. With the caveat that boats took 8 moves per square on lava compared to 1 in water, 2 on shore. So I am curious to what you plan to do with Lava. I think it would be cool to use the DLR model so that you could create rivers of Lava (or moats of Lava) that required boats to cross over/go down though you might want to use 5 moves instead of 8.

I love the towers. Great graphics and they look really cool. Is the sight radius going to be just a pure number as in 6 squares or will be a number added to the best unit in the tower itself? I was hoping for the latter where it increased the view of the best unit in the tower so that a Dragon with it's 6 view in a tower might get extended to 10 if the base number was 4. It would really make them more useful for viewing.

Also I *love* that you now allow maps from 50x50 to 150x150. This will really help make smaller maps for 4 players and very large maps for 8 player games. The biggest DLR maps were 160x128 so 150x150 is on par with that. Two questions about this:

1) Will it be possible though to have a wider width than height so that you could make a 100Hx150W map that looked like a typical board game map?

2) Will there be a way to auto convert the existing 150x100 maps to a 150x150 map? Bullrun was always meant to be on the 160x128 map size so it suffers on top/bottom middle positions due to the current narrowness. I don't even care if you just put the entire map on the left side and leave the right most 50 squares as fields and let me space it out accordingly as that alone would save a ton of time.

Beta 4 looks amazing!

I'm stoked to play on a 150x150 map dotted with towns and villages.

There was some talk about a terrain that would be impassable to all units (flyers included), and I'm guessing that terrain is lava/volcano.

Never really understood the whole DLR lava boat thing myself. Boats and lava don't really mix all that well.

Pillager,

Me too. Hopefully that size map won't take forever to move across. That's the only downside to maps that big when you have units that only move 8-12 squares.

It also tends to make Vectoring more powerful than ever and is a good reason to have a timed vectoring option like DLR had.

I think the boat on Lava was meant to represent that lava was a liquid stream and not solid ground. I never took it to literally mean a boat since obviously *nothing* mixes with Lava. Having it require a boat would give another boat terrain beside water and allow it to function like a moat.

I certainly hope that Lava is a passable terrain of some kind. It doesn't make much sense to have terrain that no unit can move on. Especially since it's the perfect terrain for Elementals/Dragons to get a terrain bonus of +2 on. In fact Elementals could also give a nice move bonus there.

KGB,
Its not decided yet exactly how the towers will work. We need to take some technical stuff into consideration also with the FOW/viewranges. But we´ll see when we get there :-)

1. Yes any mapsize you can pick is allowed, or thats the plan anyway, so you can have a map 50 squares high and 150 squares wide.

2. I think we can do some manual hack to the map so it loads as a 150x150 map, it will then be located on the left side, and you would get 50 new empty tiles on the right hand side. Remind me when we launch beta4 and we can try it out.

SnotlinG,

I just read the latest blog about towers not being discovered until you 'see' them. I assume you mean towers built by players during the game and not ones placed by the map editor. Those ones should always be 'known' along with other sites like villages/gold mines etc.

Hmm yes good point.
I think scenario towers should be known from the start for all players. Player built towers wont be known until you 'see' them.
Not sure about the (extra) Neutral units, if they should be know by the start or not. I´ll discuss this with Piranha...

while we're talking about maps, why hasnt someone re-done the Eyrthea campaign map from War2. One of my favorite maps ever. I'm pretty much the worst mapmaker ever so here is my plea for some amazing mapmaker to crank it out.

I'll work on a Eyrthea Map. Starting a new job may take a while but I'll work on it.

And a couple of 1 on 1 maps would be great. I have played more than 30 games of the desertshowdown now.
