Getting Allies

Do new heroes come with allies at all? I've played a couple of games now, and never been offered a hero with an ally. Do I need to save up more money for this option?

Seems like you need at least 1300 gold before being offered a hero with allies, and it is usually only one ally unless you have 1800+ gold.
