Interesting Terrain Quirk

Postby KGB » Thu Nov 03, 2011 4:25 am

Not sure if this is a bug or a quirk of how terrain bonus's work.

But when I park a unit with an open bonus under a bridge (as in the unit is a ship) it gets it's terrain bonus. This makes Pikemen the ultimate bridge blockers of boats/sea serpents because they are getting +15 bonus while on the ship under the bridge.

Personally I think this is a bug in how that square is handled but others may see it as a feature allowing Pikemen/Lt Cavalry/Hv Cavalry/Elephants in boat form to find a safe spot while traveling in boats.

I would have thought they got the bonus (because Bridge is considered type 'Open'), but that they should still be capped by their boat cap.

Bridges should really be considered water type terrain IMO.

I think boat-to-boat combat under a bridge should be considered Water terrain and that boat-to-unit on bridge combat would be considered open terrain.

So Pikemen in boats should not be getting any bonus unless they were fighting units on the bridge.

and what if there are both units on the bridge and on the boat on the same square? should it be both water and open terrain battle? x_X

It should really just be water terrain. Would you rather be a kraken lurking under a bridge or a poor knight waiting fearfully for the next tentacle to snatch him up and pull him down into the murky depths?

bridge is bridge (open terrain) and sea is sea. It's a bit strange that units on boat can attack units on the bridge, but if they do, they should fight with boat cap, units on the bridge shouldn't. The problem seems to be that bridge is considered open terrain also for units on boat. They should keep their boat cap, imo.

I've fixed this for Beta5.

A unit with open bonus will receive bonus on the bridge.
A unit with water bonus will receive bonus on (under) the bridge
A unit in ship form with open bonus will not receive open bonus on (under) bridge

So, we must be getting mixed terrains in beta 5 ^^
