Starting Cities

Snotling,

I know we've talked about the starting spots before on maps where they are undefined and you wrote an algorithm to distribute them equally far apart.

Currently only the Riverwar map is using this and I've played several games on it where the starting spots weren't well balanced. All of those before were using fog of war so it wasn't easy to see exactly where each player started.

However in game 2916, just started today there is no fog of war. If you take a look at this game, you can see that the algorithm isn't working or not being used. 2 capitols (Red/Orange) are in the city next to each other. Had the starting armies been slightly different (a hills unit) it would have been possible to eliminate a player on turn 1 before they ever took a turn! The rest aren't balanced well either.

P.S. It would be nice if you could simply restart this game entirely and generate new capitol spots.

Thanks for reporting!
For this game I still had the logfiles when it was created, so I could follow the gameinitialization step by step :geek:
It turns out there is a small bug in the random algorithm for the 5th player, causing him to be placed in the middle location.

I have updated this for Beta3 games (as well as for coming beta4 of course :-)), so we shouldnt see this behavior in the future - I hope! :-)

PS, unfortunately it is not easy to just restart a game, there are too many dependencies to take into consideration.
Easiest is if you just resign that game and start a new one.

Thanks for spotting this bug!

Snotling,

Glad you were able to find it.

I hope you checked a potential 6,7 and 8 player start too in case they are bugged as well.

It's too hard to try and get 5 people back into the same game when they don't know each other. So restarting isn't really an option in a game like that.
