White flashes while moving the view

Postby entropy » Wed Mar 07, 2012 6:15 pm

The game flickers in white when I play on my less powerful computer (Samsung chromebook series 5); it happens on larger maps, the larger the map the more flashes, up to the point that the SmallWorld Tutorial is unplayable. It's a chromebook, so I can't resize the window without horrible hacks ^^

It looks like between two renders, chrome fills the screen in white. Can I haz double buffering in javascript and html :] ?

Configuration:
Google Chrome 18.0.1025.46 beta
Platform 1660.57.0 (Official Build) beta-channel x86-alex
Firmware Alex.03.61.0735.0056G3.0021
WebKit 535.19 (@109272)
V8 3.8.9.9

My browser serves the user agent Mozilla/5.0 (X11; CrOS i686 1660.57.0) AppleWebKit/535.19 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/18.0.1025.46 Safari/535.19

Thats weird, I havent heard anything like this before.
Could you doublecheck that you dont use any zoom-level in the browser?
I know if the zoom is not set to 100% it could behave a bit strange sometimes...

Thanks for replying. Yes, I double checked, it's at 100%. I forgot to mention in my OP that when the problem appeared, I tried different zoom levels, and it gets worse.

When zoomed in, the rendering is slower so the white flashes are longer, and when zoomed out, the UI is indeed weird, but the whole left panel remains white. I guess I could enable the developer tools and poke the page to see what this white area stands for, because I think that this left white panel could be the same thing that causes the flickering.

Bonus: I took screenshots.

A flicker at normal zoom:

The (related?) half-white page when zoomed out:

Just to clarify, does this happen when you are dragging the map around?
When you are not moving the map, I guess you have no flickers?

Yes, only when interacting with the page, like dragging the map or clicking a UI element that pops a dialog box, or closing a dialog box, or during the animation of a unit moving (because it moves the view).

Ok, unfortunately I dont have any chromebook myself so I cant test it :-(
Do you see any difference in maps with a lot of water compared to maps with little/none water? (I Know the water animation is CPU heavy).

Im not sure how it works, but I guess you cant try any other browser?

Thanks, I think that you are right, the water is a big factor. Is there some way to replace the water tiles by static graphics? Some greasemonkey script perhaps, if not an in-game or account setting?

Unfortunately not possible yet. But definitely something we will look into in our drive to make the game more friendly to handheld devices (and slow computers)

Thanks for testing and reporting!
