Rebuild razed city bug

Postby hatchfactory » Sun Jan 22, 2012 10:33 pm

In game 6260 -Crescendo Test - I had sufficient funds - 541 - to rebuild a razed city (Kortol)- cost 500 - with a light infantry. Upon rebuild money was withdrawn yet the popup informing me to select a unit with the construction ability popped up and no rebuild. Upon reload of page money was returned, yet cost to rebuild Kortol had raised to 575. I assume the first cost was incorrect, which brings up a question. Why do cities which were razed with production cost more than cities razed without? Upon rebuild you have the same value, no production, no walls. I figure if you have to pay extra to a city that had production shouldn't the production return also?

What exactly determines the rebuild cost? is it related to production, or income, or what?

I think it should be related only to the city's inherent income. You don't rebuild production capacity or walls when rebuilding a city, so do you pay for them? It would be interesting if players could restore the city completely with the Rebuild command without the full cost of all of the individual purchases. You could argue that the foundations and some materials are still present, offsetting costs. I'm unsure about that concept, but if it is allowed then we should have options about what to rebuild. I don't want to pay for rebuilding unwanted production when all I want is region control with walls! Especially if we're paying for nothing, as Hatchfactory suggests.

LPhillips,

I believe the cost is 500 + the income of the city. It has nothing to do with production that might have been there at one time.

So the first number HatchFactory saw was in error.

The rebuildcost is calculated like this:
var rebuildcost = 500+income*5;

Since a rebuilt city gets its income restored,it makes sense to have diffrent rebuildcosts.

Is it possible you saw the rebuildcost as 500 when clicking on the city when it was in FOW?
Since if you dont know the cityincome, it will report rebuildcost as 500 (until you have scouted the city and then know the income and thus know the real rebuildcost)

Good to know I'm getting what I pay for :D .

The city was not in FOW as my unit was sitting on it, I was allowed to pay the 500 for rebuild. My internet connection was very slow that day, maybe slow update from the server after city came into view?

Hmm, if the server response was slow, your unit should have halted before exploring the FOW (it never unfogs an area until it has the response from the server).

So its a bit weird. Lets keep our eyes open and see if it happens again.
If you click (or hover) over a razed city, it should tell you both the city income + the rebuildcost, so if you see rebuildcost of 500 check if the income is 0, otherwise we have a bug somehow there.
Let me know if you see it again :-)

I had a similar problem:
At the beginning of the turn, my captial lay in ruins within the fog of war. I clicked it through the fog of war to see it rebuilding cost, which was reported as 500/0. Since I only had 600, I moved a Scout there. Then I moved some other units elsewhere on the map. Eventually I selected the Scout again and ordered "Rebuild CIty". I got an info that rebuilding is not possible here. The money was deducted from my Treasury. The graphics had changed to a city in ruins from a side that was not at all participating in that 1vs1 ladder game.

I reloaded the game. My money is back in the treasury, the city now shows ruins of my own side, and the minimap shows is as ruined city too. The cost is now shown as 900/80, befitting a captial. So all is ok now, but it felt pretty scary. The gameid=15411.

It looks like your city has been rebuilt now though?
How did it get razed from the first time? Was it a self raze or was it razed by your opponent?

Yes, I rebuilt that city in the turn after encountering the bug (since I only had 600 gold, which would have been enough to rebuild for 500, but not enough to rebuild for 900 as shown after the reloading).

It was razed by my opponent, of course. It lay in ruins - and hidden beneath the fog of war - for 2-3 turns.

My opponent razed 3 cities of mine. The first I rebuild right away, but it was never fogged. My capital, where I noticed the bug, was the second.

For the third, I noticed that the mouse over with the rebuild cost does not change if I scout the razed city.

I checked my logs for next version (version 0.8), and it turns out I have already fixed this bug there :-)

So in Beta5 games this bug might turn up. To be sure of the correct rebuild cost, you need to explore the city from the FOW, and then hit F5 to reload the client. It should then show you the proper rebuildcost.

Thanks for reporting! :-)
