Comes and goes for me. I was able to play turns in a couple of games with no problems. Then all of a sudden doing anything caused a timeout and a reload making it take 20 minutes to do something that normally takes 30 seconds.

I've seen this issue before with the server. It used to happen at very regular daily intervals. I always assumed it was your host providers site getting busy at certain times and being unable to keep up with the demand. I would always come back later and find everything OK.

One thing to note that when this problem happens I can't even ping www.warbarons.com. That usually means it's not the game but rather the hosting server or a DNS server that is the problem.

I was wondering why I didn't have too many turns to play tonight :)

Do you experience these kind of waiting on a regular basis?
I play every day and I never have any problem, Maybe once every second month I get lost connection. It can happen that I see the waiting animation but quite rarely.
Of course being close to the server will give me faster response time but losing connection on a regular basis sounds like we have a problem the needs to be solved by 0.9.

The CPU usage on the server is usually just a few percent and the host is considered to be the number one host here in Sweden so I don't think we can blame them. There must be something we can do to improve performance.

I found a little test code online and added a measure for ping time to it. You test it here and post your results: http://www.warbarons.com/bandwidth/default.htm
I get around 20-40 ms so really fast from here.

When you fight a battle especially a bigger one and when you open the battle report list after playing a bunch of turns (the list is longer) it will download quite a lot of data in version 0.8. I could see that 100 kb download in too uncommon but in version 0.9 I've been able to reduce that to around 2-3 kb at the most so there are some performance improvements. But if you get the waiting problem while moving for example the amount of data sent is really small.

Piranha,

From my work connection:

Download speed (60 Mb/s)
Upload speed (3 Mb/s)
Ping time: 170 ms

I think I have plenty of bandwidth :) This is where I saw the problem yesterday. This issue does not happen regularly. I can easily go well over a week or more without seeing any lost connections at home / work. What ever happened yesterday was an unusual occurrence and had nothing to do with battles. I would attempt to move a unit 1 square and it would hang and time out indicating that sending the move to the server was failing because all that was required was the unfog data (there weren't even any units in the fogged area).

I personally suspect it's a DNS problem because pings weren't getting through. Either with your provider if they are doing their own DNS or with whom ever was providing DNS data for your site. I sometimes see a similar thing with my Warlorders site (it's hosted on GoDaddy) where an attempt to get to my site will time out for no reason and then be there just fine a couple of minutes later.
