I thought already placed towers on a map didn't cost upkeep?
On the small world map I captured a tower and I got a message saying it has an upkeep of 3 gold.

All Towers that you own (regardless if you build them or capture them) will cost some kind of upkeep.
If you dont want the Tower, you can just raze it and it will be removed
