Game Times

Postby KGB » Fri Jan 27, 2012 2:21 am

I think the time server for the games is messed up some how.

Last night around midnight EST, I went to bed and had 22 hrs left in a game to take my turn in the game Wasted 5962. Meaning I should have had until 10:pm today to finish it. However when I logged onto the site today at work around noon it said I had only 3 hours left to do my turn. I assumed I had just misread the time somehow.

While I was at work I noticed my turn came due in another game New Big Map Test 2 4747 which has 24 hrs to do a turn. By the time I got home and looked around 8:00 PM I was already down to 3 hours left to do my turn! Unfortunately this game is Beta4 and so I don't get email reminders so I can't go back and see exactly when the email was sent for this game. But there is NO WAY anything close to 24 hours has passed. Especially since my team mate hasn't done his turn and he usually beats me to taking it.

The time thing is pretty complicated to get right. We did some adjustments a few days ago because it was wrong before. Was hoping that it's finally correct.

Can you look if you have the same time left in your account and when you open the game?

If you can try to keep an extra eye, especially on B5 games and see if you notice how it changes. The time is automatically manipulated by your computer clock and timezone entered on the computer when displayed by the javascript.

You can see the time set from the server by viewing page source and search for var TargetDate.
It'll show you an array if the times when the turns end.

So just the display is manipulated, and the clock is kept on your servers?

I had several games where I know I took my last turn less than 24 hours ago. I just logged on expecting to at least have a couple hours left and instead they were almost all showing 'Next Player' and I ended up losing my turn. Something about the time is definitely off...

Ok, I think I'm on to the problem. I just got a new Tablet PC today, so I had decided to try out Warbarons on it. That was when I encountered all my games saying 'Next Player' and it automatically ended my turn on all those games when I entered them. It had been less than 24 hours since my last turn so this shouldn't have happened.

Well, I'm now back on my laptop and I've compared the game times and on my laptop they all have a day more than what is shown on my laptop. I found that my tablet's time was off by a day, so I switched it back. The times wouldn't show up correctly until I cleared my cookies.

Anyway, I'm not sure I like the idea of the 'Next Player' thing automatically ending your turn when you enter the game on the client. The server should handle changing it to the next player if your turn has lapsed. It's not uncommon for people to use multiple computers, I could see this issue coming up on occasion when the time between computers doesn't match.

Screenshots attached in case you'd like to see what I saw.

Hello,
I have made another fix to the gametimes now. Both on the account side and in the game itself.
Now it only reads and calculates seconds from the server, so local settings on the computers should not affect this.
This is only valid for beta5 games though. Beta4/beta3 games still have this issues, and it will probably not be fixed as we dont have that many of those still going anyway :-)

Let us know if you still have problems.
