Give option to turn off NAP

Postby Jeremy » Mon Jan 21, 2013 2:19 am

The more I play 8-person free-for-alls, the more I realize the main reason I don't like them is because of computer-enforced non-aggression pacts.

I'd like the option in game creation to turn off non-aggression pacts. I'm all for people making deals -- but there should ALWAYS be the possibility of betrayal. Makes the games more fluid and interesting.

The alternative is for people who feel the way I do to only play in team games -- which is pretty much what I'm doing now.

You mean as an gameoption during the hosting of the game?
As from version 0.9 you can attack a players NAPed units as long as they dont stand in a city or building though :-)

Yes, that's what I mean -- in the game setup options.

Games are more fun when betrayal is always an option!

It would be a game setup option to not allow NAP's. If you can end it at any time it doesn't really exist. In that case an alliance is just a verbal agreement, and it can then be cancelled whenever one player decides not to keep his word.

Of course you can do this now. Just tell the other player you want an agreement not to attack without a NAP.

No, I can't do it right now. I can't make offer, threaten, or convince a player into attacking different player with which they've made a NAP.

Also, I can't believably agree to not attack someone while refusing a NAP.

Fear, doubt, betrayal, reversals of fortune and friends -- they're what make multi-player games interesting -- and they're all diminished by computer enforced NAPs.

I don't see any reason not to have this as a game option. Personally I wouldn't use it but obviously Jeremy would.

The reason I wouldn't use it is because I don't know many of the players. So as a result it's impossible to know who might be a real life friend of another player and simply always team up together. This type of thing tends to happen more frequently than many suspect and can ruin games because you end up always fighting 2v1 battles.
