Hero-less games

Postby ams16 » Sat Sep 14, 2013 2:00 am

Hi,

I thought of a new wish.

I would like the option to proclaim a game to be hero-less. No one would get any hero offers, ever. (Including no hero offer in the first turn.)

It would make an interesting game that is much more about unit tactics and kingdom building than leveling up your hero. I think it would make Warbarons a very different game, so I don't think it should be allowed in ladder games.

But I think it would be fun to try. Also, I don't think it would be that difficult to code. (I don't know.) Yes, ruins would be pointless (except as terrain) in this version, but, you can't have everything.

What do people think?

Interesting idea, but I don't see why it couldn't be a ladder game as long as everyone knows going in.

Good idea! I would definitely play such a game.

Why not provide full choice, and let the users select allowed classes (including the choice of none)? For example, I wouldnt mind a game restricted to paladins only.

(In general, Heroes have grown far too powerful for my taste now. Many I game I lost due to an early barbarian killing one 8 stack of 2 turners after 2 turners, including wolves. In midgame, combo stacks rule, again making everything to cannonfodder. First to loose the heroes looses the game.)

Full choice of which heroes would make it harder to code, I imagine, but otherwise, that's a great idea. (No Barbs or Assassins?)

While I am not interested in hero-less games or games with restricted heroes I see no reason not to provide such options with one caveat:

If such games are played, there can be no posting about balance tweaks to units/heroes etc based on such games. The reason being that it's hard enough now to keep things reasonably balanced with all the units and heroes (What I am 100% certain is going to happen is that if someone plays without heroes or without certain heroes they are just going to find different heroes or units that have become 'too good' on certain maps).

Most definately. It would be more for the map builders to make the maps balanced with units allowed to be built than trying to balance everything else. Clearly in a heroless game archons and great archons really are pointless.

So are ruins, items etc. Games would by nature be very poor in money unless you are on the few maps that have incredibly high city incomes (Battlefield, East/West Illuria etc). Most will end up as battles of 1 turn units because no one will able to afford anything else other than what free production they find making the game a pure city race.

Those wanting to do away with the Barb/Assassin will simply find the 2 Archon units to be over powered must-have units to deal with high level enemy heroes.

I did not even think about the money aspect, it would really make orc's quite useful as one of the few ways to get a bit of coin is to pillage it. Ruins would be useful for movement and the defensive bonus.
