New ship class for rivers.

I think there should be a new ship class for better travel on river terrain. The djonk (3 river, 4 ford move cost) and the galleon (4 river and 5 ford move cost) are useless for movement along a river. The galley currently gets 2 move cost on river and 3 move cost on ford tiles. Even with this reasonable movement though I have found that units with terrain bonuses, often the fastest way of travel is to disembark from the galley and go on foot even if the river is a straighter path (assuming the river has fords in it).

So maybe the addition of a high risk, high reward river craft would add to the game. Something with high moves like the galley or galleon, something with 1 move cost river and 2 move cost ford, but has low strength maybe 10 or 15 and movement outside of a river would be horrible limiting it to rivers only.

You mean like a viking longboat give it like a 1 move on river, 2 over ford, 3 on coast and 4 in ocean. Total of 18 moves and yeah a 15 maximum attack would be good I think 10 would be too low.

Maybe, just improve one of the current boat types for river travel. I never entirely understood the point of the galley anyway. Is it for coastal movement? 3 boat types seems like plenty to me.

I agree, the galley would be more useful if in addition to improved coastal movement it got better river movement.
Otherwise it isn't much use really.

I used Galleys extensively on old-style rivers. Good for that.

They should likely be improved for new-style rivers as well.
