Warbaron's Cup 2013

Discuss ongoing tournaments and plans for new tournaments

Can't we just make an altered version of either "Colorful Snowflake" or "Four Lords" then? Just removing production limits in "Colorful Snowflake"; and/or reverting "Four Lords" to a previous, tried & proven state should not be too risky and difficult to do, would it? Otherwise, "Archipelago" would fit in with the water-theme.

With respect to the tournament style:
While I also prefer larger maps, I won't be able to play four games with a 2 day limit simultaneously on big maps in the later stages.

The important question here should be: What should a tournament offer in contrast to normal ladder play?
For me, the tournament offers:
  • Matchmaking: I played new opponents, and got exciting games.
  • Fixed number of games: no advantage if a player can play many games, no disadvantage if a player cannot play many games

It's really so, all have the same number of games, almost all best players will play each other.

I would vote for 4 Lords.

Tabanli,

To use 4 Lords we would need DarkH to make it shareable (or Piranha/SnotlinG force it to shareable) and then modify the map back to it's original settings before it was ruined. Right now it's not playable.

The same goes for 8 Kingdoms. We need control of the map so that the start spots can be changed for 1v1 play from random to any top vs any bottom (or any east vs any west) starting spots.

Igor,

I think the reason the Waste is used so much is because it has very short games (<20 turns). It's far to dominated by 1 unit (Sandworm) and 1 hero (Horselord) so that game play is completely linear. That's the whole problem in round 1 is that there no strategy to the map. It's completely linear in that there is only 1 way to play. All 4 of my games have played out exactly the same which I find very boring.

As far as another tournament goes, what I would do would be *nothing* like what's being done here. I want to use a wide variety of maps and game situations:
- Games that include enemy AI's
- Games that include AI's as your ally
- Probably a scenario game played in mirror mode (you and your opponent play a map twice but switch sides in the 2nd game)
- An FFA game (where all players in a bracket play in one FFA game with points awarded based on finish)
- Large/huge maps and longer turn times (3+ days because I don't care if it takes months to complete)
- Non-ladder settings since it will involve non-ladder maps.

I suspect not as many players would be interested in such a tourney but I'd hope to get 8-10 players to play to make 2 brackets.

KGB, your tournament idea sounds much more interesting (to me). Some people like to play small maps over and over. I guess they like to perfect the details of their strategies? But, that isn't fun for me. I much prefer larger maps with more strategic options.

Besides, the ladder system already rewards playing fast games on small maps. Why do the same thing in another venue?

A tournament to promote scenario maps sounds very interesting! I'm in on anything with a turn time limit of 3 days or more, once this one is over.

Whats with Pitfall for the 2nd Round? I think its well balanced and its not too short.

I have almost said: such a good map Pitfall :-) But a look on it has showed that not all units can be produced in cities. Players in the tourney must have ability to produce any unit in any city. Even Kraken in the middle of desert, if the owner wish so. All that players want.

For the next tournament I was going to suggest groups of 8 players, playing several FFA games in various maps. This should be total carnage.

I got ok from Darkh to set the four lords map to sharable so anyone can make a modified versions of it. I'll do it tomorrow.
