Devastating mis-clicks

Postby SCIkick » Sat Apr 23, 2011 5:42 am

I've had plenty of minor mistakes with the mouse with random armies. Usually you just have to take your loss and move on, adjust your strategy. It hurts when you accidentally make a move you did not intend.

But, I just had one though that pretty much doomed my 75 turn game, costing me a lvl. 10 hero . I was tired, but noticed it was my turn so in good sportsmanship played my turn before a long work shift so others would not have to wait. I somehow made a drastic mistake in moving a hero valkyrie and her army in enemy territory, the stack by itself was no doubt unstoppable and the strongest army in the game. But, somehow after the move I left her selected and moved her all alone in the forest, separated from her army next to a city of enemy elves! There was no way for her army to catch up to her.

I made my case with the opposition, but of course she was slaughtered and her leaderless army almost destroyed.

I wish there was a way to correct something like this. It was a great, exciting 75 turn game with 4 players left, and now I am bowing out due to a mis-click. Kind of stinks, I guess thats the game though.

I feel your pain. I sent a hero into the drink last round with a simple double-click to a few squares down the road. With the current glitchy pathfinding, he decided to go by boat... It was literally something like 5 spaces away along a straight road. Bleh. Two turns out of battle while enemy heroes advance. If I didn't have a few other prospects, I'd be bowing out of a game that I should rightfully win over a simple error.

SCIkick; The problem is that most games are played with FOW, so an undo move option would not work for these games anyway (since you then could "spy" out in the fog, and then undo your move etc) :-(

LPhillips; I know, I have done the same thing several times myself. But in Beta4 the pathfinding algorithm is totally rewritten, and works a lot better, especially with regards to anchors/boat conversations.

Those are the types of players I generally don't play with again.

Well thanks for your viewpoint KGB. It really depends on who you are playing with. If a player clearly made a mis-click and makes a case for a re-do, or some kind of negotiation... I would do so out good sportsmanship. Some players just aren't like that though, unfortunately.

It really did feel cheap how this hero died after 75 turns. I just don't see how the other player felt any kind of gratitude by having to rely on a mis-click to finally get the upper hand.

At any rate, I'll try to avoid playing with them in the future.

Happens to me often too.

Weirdo path is one thing.

The other is that the map-moving is done with a left click as well. Sometimes you have a delay in your grafix, so you want to create a movement path for an army, but since there is no path you think you moved the map a bit, so you click again - but then it happens, you already had a path made which wasnt displayed immidiately and the army moves, to nowhereland mostly.

So far when I mentioned that in the ingame chat, mainly when something happened like that lone hero behind enemy lines, noone ever cared about it.

I think it could already help a lot if there was an other way to move the map.

One thing that could be done that could help is giving the option to use right mouse to move a unit.
The bad path problem should be solved in beta4, but sometimes you have a unit selected then you move around the map and decide to select another army or click a city without noticing the already selected unit. If the pathfinding calculation doesn't draw a visible path right away you might click again because nothing happens and the result is your selected unit start moving.

But if you could select a option that only right button work to move units that should never happen.

I would be happy if I could scroll the map with the arrow keys and about an option to turn it off on left mouse click. That way you know you always get a path, even if not displayed right away.

Piranha,

It could also be solved if the game had keyboard shortcuts such as 'm' to move a stack along it's path.

Then accidental double clicks could be turned off (game option, clicking/double clicking would simply make a move path) and you'd only be able to move using the m key.

That way the mouse is only for scrolling the map/setting move paths for those that want to avoid misclicks.

Any of these changes would be helpful. I can confirm that most of these misclick problems happen for me when the display of a path is delayed. Sometimes I wouldn't want to move my units there even if the path were a good one, because I am just testing movement cost. Fixing pathfinding won't correct those errors.
