Bid for Turn Order

Postby KGB » Fri Feb 03, 2012 12:03 am

While discussing the importance of turn order on smaller maps in our Crescendo Test 3 game it occurred to me that rather than randomly decide who goes where in the turn order, players should blindly bid for their spot.

The bid would be subtracted from their starting gold. The player (or combined team bid) that's highest goes first, next highest second and so on.

You'd enter your bid on the game join screen after you join a game. All you'd need to add is the amount of starting gold for that game so players would know if it's a rich or poor starting gold map. Doesn't have to be exact amounts, just something like starting gold is 600-800 or 801-1000 or 1001-1200 or 1201-1400 or 1400+. That way you'd know whether bidding a 100 gold is a lot or a little of their starting gold.

This opens up a new strategy of deciding how much it's worth for you to go first in the turn order.

Maybe as an "Advanced" game setting, but I don't think newcomers would know how to properly bid...

Not sure newcomers know how to properly play either. But that doesn't stop them from learning

I like this idea. A lot. If you do gain the upper hand with the first turn, the game is balanced by the offset of gold you give up for it. Requires no individual map tinkering, adjustment per spawns, or anything like that. It's a perfect system in terms of balance because players make the decisions themselves about what it's worth.

So if my playstyle won't be rewarded much by going first, I don't bid much. If I am greatly advantaged by going first, I bid high for it and pay for my advantage. The only difficulty will be that players should be able to know their spawn point before the game starts if this is implemented. It won't come into play on mirrored maps and team games much, but on some FFA's it will be vital. Who cares about going first from white's spot in Westfold? Hah! But the black/red spawns would be hugely advantaged by going first.

To get a bit off-topic:
If the host could select the starting spawns for each team, then the team members could be allowed to pick their spots. If two or more pick the same, those players get randomized within their team's allotted spawns. No clue how to handle FFA.

If there would be something like this how should the bid thing be. Should you see all the other players bid? This would mean that you would have to keep looking at the lobby to increase your bid and when will the game start? When all are ok with the bidding?.

The other way is to make blind bids. So each player just enters a sum. This could result in you not being able to afford the first hero.
Right now the starting money is decided during the game creating process.

Piranha,

Blind Bids for sure. Players should not know what others bid. So you might pay 50 to go first when everyone else only bid 5-10 because they didn't think it was important.

You'll have to change where the starting money is done. You don't have to determine exact amounts. Just a rough estimate as I mentioned above (600-800, 801-1000, 1001-1200, 1201-1400,1400+). Then during the game creation process the game can determine the exact amount in that range. That way players know how much they will have to bid and still afford production/hero.

I think KGB has it right all round.

As for when the game starts? As it does now. Each player should make their bids when they join the game if they choose, and the way it works now no one can miss their opportunity. The game can't be started until all players have joined. So the last player to join is the first person who can press the button.
