Out of Sync Errors

Postby KGB » Sat Jul 17, 2010 11:40 pm

I tend to set long movement paths for my units in the mid game. Typically long enough that it takes 2-3 turns for a unit to complete the path.

What I've noticed is that when I start a turn, if I move other units so that they end up sitting on an existing movement path when I get around to moving those units (via the move all button) I get an Out of Sync error when the units get to the point of crossing my other units. This causes a full refresh of the browser.

To repeat:

1) Set a long movement path for a unit/stack that takes more than 1 turn to complete.
2) On the next turn, move another unit/stack so that it sits in the middle of the uncompleted movement path.
3) Move the original stack via the move button.
4) A resync will happen as the stack tries to cross the new stack.

This is most noticeable when setting a path into a city and the arriving stack forces a refresh when crossing units that are in the city (ie stack arrives from south side of city and causes a refresh when moving to the north side across units sitting in the south part of the city).

I also get out of sync errors often. They occur regularly when a stack moves through another stack.

Hello,
Thanks for reporting, I´ll investigate :-)

Do you see if your stack that is moving, does it move through the other stack to its final destination, and you then get the out-of-sync error? Or does it stop next to the other stack and refuses to move through it?

Is it only happening in cities, or also outside in normal terrain (grassland/forest etc)?

SnotlinG,

On my computer, the stack moves to it's final destination or until it runs out of movement for that turn. Then I get the 'Out of Sync' message. After the refresh, the stack has been placed just before the stack it was trying to cross. In other words on the server end, the out of sync happens just before the moving stack crosses the other stack. So I then have to re-select the stack and finish the movement.

X = moving stack
Y = stack being crossed.
F = Final Destination

This is how it starts out:
X---Y----F

This is how it appears on my PC when the out of sync error happens.
----Y----X (at the F point)

This is how it appears after the refresh
---XY----F

This happens in cities, grass, roads etc. Basically all terrain. Because cities tend to collect several stacks of armies it's most noticeable there. But a close second is on roads.

Ok,
after out-of-sync reload, is it then possible for your stack X to cross stack Y when it is moving?

SnotlinG,

Yes. After the out-of-sync reload you can move X across Y.

However the original move path is gone (I assume the re-sync removed it) so you have to click on the destination square again to create a new path and then hit the move button.

My guess is that the server suddenly detects stack Y in the middle of the path and stops the movement not realizing that it's your stack and that the movement should be allowed to continue. This probably happens because when the original movement path was created stack Y was not in stack X's movement path so the server is confused by the sudden appearance of a stack there because remember the original movement path looked like:

X-----------F

Then Stack Y hopped into the path after the path was created.

The fix might be a simple as refreshing the path algorithm just before starting the move.

In game Duel2 I just lost a stack due to the re-sync error.

I tried exiting and re-entering the game but it is not there.

The lost stack was 2 Hv Infantry that tried to cross over the Elemental and Dragon stack. I got a re-sync error. After the reload I tried to move again and got a 2nd error (I assume on the 2nd stack). This time on the reload the stack of 2 Hv Infantry is missing. The Elemental stack looks strange when I click on it so I am guessing both stacks are occupying the same space. Not sure what the game is going to do with that next turn.

It looks like:

F---YY---X

where X is trying to move to F. I got the resync twice in a row and now the stack appears to be sitting right on top of the right most Y stack (Elemental stack).

SnotlinG,

Too late. I've already played my next turn in the game. Unless you can back up 1 turn (turn 24 is the one you want to look at) in a replay mode.

In any case, indeed there were 2 stacks on the same square. When I moved the Elemental stack, the 2 Hv Infantry stack appeared right under neath it (I wonder what would have happened if I was attacked there).

Ok, so you had 10 units in 1 square?
I guess there was no flag then?
