Map Makers Contest!

Take this base, and create a balanced 8-player map. The due date is August 15, 2012. Submissions will be judged by votes, and must adhere to the following rules:

1) Use this shape. The map is public/shared, and can be downloaded freely.

2) Maintain the original spawns. The whole point is to generate several balanced 8-player maps. Minor relocations are not prohibited, as long as the integrity of the 8-corner design is maintained.

3) A mirror map is not necessary, but the map should not be obviously imbalanced.

The reward will be specified soon, and will consist of Warbarons credits. Get crackin'!

Small map at 100x. Any reason for not going 150x?

Also why not make it an Octagon? Your shape is close to one but not perfectly symmetrical like an Octagon. That would make a better base for a no corner map.

In a game where people can travel 1.4 tiles faster by moving diagonally, this is not an octagon by distance, that's true. However, mathematically speaking, it's 1 tile off from being a perfect octagon. I don't mind making it bigger if you think that's necessary.

Cramming 8 players into a 100x map will mean:

1) Few cities (8) per player if you want them spread out which means not a lot of money/varied strategies due to lack of resources. Or lots of cities (12+) crammed close leading to the Stratego problem of 1 hero holding 4-5 cities hostage making defense problematic.

2) To prevent a lot of early conflict the map will require very heavy terrain and lots of different terrain so you can't just use 1 specialized unit to zip around. This of course will tend to make fliers better since they don't pay a terrain penalty.

My rule of thumb is that 100x maps are best served for 6 or fewer players. It's too bad there isn't a 125x125 option in the editor. Still you could just use 125x125 of a 150x150 and make the rest water which would allow for sailing all the way around the land area thus introducing another way to invade similar to the 4 Lords Map.

Well, I'll have to recreate the base then. I hope no one has begun work. 125x125 with a water surrounding seems good to me.
