I took hatchfactory's suggestion and connected the lake, connected the rivers through the lava wall and added gaps in the corners where the swamp and hills meet. I also added more docks for launching ships. To promote players using the side passes, I put an income site with 50 gold income and a ruin with vampires that gives 1500 gold.

I'm playing a game on this map now.

I'm a bit disappointed in the neutrals. Other than the initial couple of cities around the capitol all the rest are heavily guarded (Dragons/Demons/Kraken/Archons etc) but contain nothing of value. As in their gold income is low and the only armies they produce by default are garbage (Lt Inf/Lt Calv/Orcs/Scouts etc). So ultimately the only difference between this map and most others is heavily guarded neutrals that artificially slow expansion. That seems like a waste of a nice map design.

The map would be a lot more fun and challenging if you changed the default production to match the neutral guard unit instead of forcing players to wait 8-10 turns per city to accumulate enough gold to actually buy something of use (Add 1 extra defending Hv Inf unit to the cities to prevent easy take over by Elves). Right now the only decision when expanding is *what's the easiest defender for me to kill*. If you changed the production as I described the decisions would be: Krakens to expand on the rivers? Green Dragon to build a power stack? Archon to negate hero bonus's? Red Dragon for stack bonus? pillage some of these to buy better production in several of my initial starting cities?

KGB,
I\'ve noticed the slow starts as well. I\'m working on an update right now. A few more cities in the SW and NE corners to promote play on the edges of the map as well as the middle. Increased income in several cities, two turn unit default defenders, more ruins and temples. I\'m also adding more docks and more bridges across waterways. I hope the changes will speed up the beginnings and make game play better.

The provided city productions are putrid!
