Ladder points and game length

Postby Chazar » Fri Nov 16, 2012 10:40 pm

Does it matter if one wins/loses a ladder game after a few/many turns?

From the ladder information page I gather that the game length of one single game has only a tiny influence on the K value for future games played on that particular ladder map (which is collected from all games on that map). However, the winner of one particular game wins points indepently of the game length, whether it was won after 2 turns or 20.

Is my understanding correct?

No, what matters is the average game length of games played on the map.

So if a map tends to give an average game of 35 turns you will get more points than a map that tends to play out in say 12 turns.

For maps where there aren't enough games to generate a reliable average game length the map size is used.

I'm not sure what the exact breakdown is, but if you play on more involved maps you will score more points for a win.

What also matters is the relationship of points between the 2 (or more) players in the game.

In other words you get more points for beating a player ranked higher than you than beating one ranked lower. This value in the calculation can overcome the map multiplier so that beating a much higher ranked player in 2 turns will score more than beating a much lower ranked player in 20 turns.
